The moment Jason crosses the threshold, he knows something is wrong.

He’s been away on a mission for a few days- not *long*, but still longer than he would’ve liked. It hadn’t been a covert operation, thank god, so he got to FaceTime you every day and text you when he wasn’t actively working.

You’d looked fine. He assumed you were fine.

The apartment isn’t really messy, but it’s not clean either. Paper plates and half-finished drinks litter the coffee table. Entire microwave meals in the trash. He takes a few minutes to clean up, with an inkling of what’s wrong, before he moves to the bedroom.

He can hear your music playing from the bathroom. It’s loud enough that you probably didn’t even hear him come inside, which is good, for now. He unpacks and puts his things away, picks your dirty clothes up off the floor to put them in the laundry basket. He cleans up a little bit more, thankful for the comedown time. He likes being greeted with a high energy kiss at the door, but this is on equal footing. He gets to take care of you, for a while, without you fighting him on it.

A few minutes later, the water shuts off, and Jason waits quietly in bed, having changed into his pajamas. He’s reading the book left on his nightstand- one of your favorites that he’s trying out. You stumble in, wiping the water droplets from your face, and you register the cleanliness of the room before you see him.

Your face *crumples* and Jason puts the book down just in time for you to wrap him in a hug. He feels hot tears on his skin.

Shushing you softly, Jason rolls over so that you’re on the bed, too, his arms supporting you and holding you close. He stands so he can get to properly settled, tucked into the blankets and covered in softness. Then he snuggles up beside you, hands pushing back your hair from your face.

“Hey.” He says softly. “What’s wrong, huh? Why’re you crying?”

If what he can put together is right, you haven’t been taking care of yourself. Hurts his heart. All he wants is for you to be safe, cared for. That’s all.
