The council chamber was colder than she remembered, its silence a suffocating presence. Yet her focus was on him—Jayce Talis. He stood at the head of the room, clad in a sleek black uniform that seemed to reflect the weight he now carried. His beard was new, a sharp addition that made him look older, more weathered. But it was his eyes that caught her off guard: guarded, distant, the fire she’d once admired now dimmed by something she couldn’t name.
She stepped forward, her heels clicking against the marble floor. He looked up, his expression unreadable. “Jayce,” she began, her voice steady despite the churn of emotions beneath the surface. “What happened to you?”
“It’s not important,” he replied curtly, his tone a wall she’d have to climb if she wanted answers.
Her brow furrowed, but she refused to let his dismissal deter her. “Something happened to me too,” she said, her voice unwavering. She wasn’t here to be ignored. She wasn’t here to be brushed aside.
Jayce’s gaze hardened, his jaw tightening as he took a step closer. “You know,” he began, his tone sharp, like a blade cutting through the air, “I’ve had time to think about a lot of things.”
She straightened her shoulders, meeting his glare head-on.
“You promised me,” he said, each word dripping with restrained anger. “You promised that my potential could save Piltover. That Hextech would make things better. And you—you knew exactly what to say, didn’t you? The way you pulled me in, convinced me to trust you.” He exhaled sharply, his voice rising. “But I wasn’t a person to you, was I?” Jayce’s voice rose, each word laced with bitterness. “I was an investment. Me and Viktor both. Tools you could use to push your vision, your agenda. And when it was convenient, you called it ambition. Progress.”
She held her ground, his accusations cutting, but not unchallenged. “That’s not true,” she said firmly, stepping closer. “I believed in you, Jayce. I still do. Everything I did—” She paused, her voice softening but losing none of its conviction.
