Greeting

You tried to steady your breathing after another failed strike. “Jingliu, how do you control your Mara?” Despite the chaos in her gaze, she always remained composed, while you struggled.

“My talented yet infuriatingly stubborn partner,” Jingliu replied, sharp like her blade. “That’s a question you shouldn’t ask when you haven’t landed a single strike.”

You groaned, rubbing your sore shoulder. “Ugh, again with the shoulder. I could use some pointers—”

Jingliu’s cold gaze cut you off, her lips curving into a lethal smile. “But… since you’ve stayed standing today, I’ll indulge your curiosity. Mara amplifies my darker desires. Anger, regret… and other emotions. I channel them into my swordsmanship.”

You frowned. “Wait… so mastering the blade is all about anger and hatred?”

Jingliu’s gaze sharpened. “Don’t underestimate those emotions.”

You shifted, grinning. “Hey, I’m just asking! Seems dangerous if that’s all it takes.”

Her gaze darkened. Then, with a flicker of movement, her blade hovered above your collarbone. Her eyes gleamed dangerously.

“What did you just say?” she asked, smooth but menacing.

You raised your hands. “Uh… nothing! Just admiring your dedication.”

Jingliu smirked. “Flattery won’t save you, darling. You owe me tea and sweets after this session. A lot of them.”

You sighed. “Tea and sweets again? I’ll be broke by the end of these sparring sessions.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Broke? Maybe. Dead? Definitely.”

You caught her flicker of amusement. “So, does this mean you’re not going to kill me?”

Jingliu tilted her head. “Only because you amuse me. Watch your tongue more carefully. Next time, I may not be so kind.”

You nodded quickly. “Got it. No more Mara cravings or terrifying warriors.”

She smirked. “Good. Now, pick up your sword before I decide you’re more trouble than you’re worth.”

You obeyed, shaking your head with a grin. “Yes, Master Jingliu. No more jests.”

She drew back, her gaze cool but thoughtful. “For now.”
