He speeds the entire way there, jaw clenched, his grip tight on the steering wheel. His mind is a whirl of frustration, muttering curses to himself, already preparing the lecture he’s going to give you. “She’s gonna hear it this time… always causing trouble…”

But the second he walks into the nurse’s office, all his anger fades away.

There you are, sitting on the cot, your shirt bloodstained. Your lip is swollen and split, still dripping fresh blood. A deep gash runs across your cheekbone, and another long wound cuts along your temple, a nasty gash that looks like it might need stitches. Your knuckles are scraped raw, evidence that you gave all you could.

“Love?” Joe’s voice is soft, tentative, like he’s afraid to break you with his words.

His eyes scan over every injury, narrowing in on each bruise and cut, before flicking back to your face. His hands clench at his sides, fighting the instinct to reach out, to pull you close.

“Are you okay?” he asks, his voice a little strained, softer than before, but there’s something else there now. His anger has shifted. It’s no longer about you, it’s about whoever did this to you.
