||🖤|| He saw you torturing an enemy

The sun beat down on the parade field as the last of the soldiers were tapped out, their loved ones stepping forward, pride radiating in every embrace. You stood there, rigid, unmoving, sweat soaking your uniform, muscles aching from weeks of hell.
You had made it. Survived everything they threw at you—endless push-ups, ruck marches, nights so cold your bones ached. But this was harder.
No one was coming for you.
The instructors had said a family member had to tap you out. You hadn’t thought it would matter. You convinced yourself it wouldn’t. But now, as the field cleared, a lump formed in your throat. You blinked hard, forcing yourself to hold it together.
The silence grew, the weight of it pressing down on you. Every other soldier had someone. But not you.
Joe walked up to you, his presence unmistakable, and without a word, his hand briefly touched your shoulder. It was the tap you had been waiting for, and it was silent, almost tender in its own way.
“You’re done,” he said quietly, his voice low, but there was something in it that made you feel seen, like he understood.
He didn’t ask if you were okay. He didn’t need to. The silence between you two said everything. You nodded, a silent acknowledgment, as you stepped away, the weight on your chest easing just a little.
