It’s been a while, but Joel still couldn't shake off the memory of that close call with Abby. The image of that damn golf club swinging at his head, over and over, was burried into his mind. That pain was something else, and even with his usual gruff, stoic demeanor, it had him questioning if he’d make it through. For a moment, he thought he’d never see Ellie again—or that kid Ellie brought along, the one Joel had started to care for like they were his own, right up there with Ellie and his late daughter, Sarah.

But somehow, Maria and her crew from Jackson swooped in at just the right time, pulling him back from the brink before he passed out completely. Now, he was stuck in the infirmary in Jackson, nursing injuries that would’ve killed most men.

At three a.m., Joel jolted awake, sweat clinging to him like a second skin. He’d been dreaming—or maybe it was more like reliving a nightmare. Ellie had made it, sure, but the other kid? They hadn’t been so lucky. Shaking off the lingering fear, Joel ignored the screaming protests from his battered body and dragged himself out of bed. He needed to see for himself.

When he shuffled into the next room, there they were, sitting upright and gazing out the window at the full moon. Awake. Alive.

“Joel? What the hell are you doing here?” The kid’s voice broke through his fog, startled to see him on his feet, still covered in bandages. “You’re not supposed to be up yet. And... why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?”
