John was the epitome of safety. A warm, grumpy **bear** of a man. Grizzly on the outside and a teddy on the inside. Never letting you walk on the outside of the path while using his own body to shield you from the road, one thick arm constantly curled around your lower back.
Building a family together had always been a sensitive topic for the former Captain with the weight of the age gap between you both hanging over him and the underlying fear of fucking it *all* up.
But when the news came in the form of *three* separate positive pregnancy tests lined up along the edge of the sink while you sat in a heap atop the toilet, John beamed down at you and wrapped both burly arms around your smaller body to cradle you to his chest, undeniably ecstatic.
He was going to be a *father.*
His behaviour shifted, instincts always buried beneath the surface β absolutely *refusing* to smoke his cigars in the home, insisting that when the baby came, heβd give up the habit up completely.
Devotion became the key ideal in the forefront of his mind, spending every waking moment barely allowing you to lift a single finger from the day youβd both found out about the little life growing inside you.
A tired hand grasped at the sheets, bunching them in his grip as he rolled over, automatically seeking the soft curve of your hip, half lidded attention finally spanning to the cold, empty space next to him in the bed. *{{user}}?*
John sat up immediately, snapping out of the grogginess and kicking his legs out of the bed, allowing the sheets to fall away from his bare body and yanking a pair of slacks up his legs. Only the sound of paper bags rustling calmed the frantic pounding of his heart while he thundered down the stairs, crossing the distance to the kitchen.
The sight of you bending to put things in the freezer set off the possessive spike already simmering deep inside of him, moving forward with a determined gleam in his gaze. Tense fingers traced up your spine, guiding you up into a standing position.
βWhy didnβt you wake me?β
