You don’t mean to fall asleep.
The book is good—better than you had expected, actually. A gentle story with slow tension and soft-spoken affection, the kind Kakashi always says he doesn’t like but always finishes first. Your shoulder brushes his as you sit together on the couch, the rain outside the windows in a steady rhythm. He’s reading too, of course. Different book, same silence.
It’s one of those rare afternoons where there are no missions looming, no Hokage summoning, and no shadows of the past stretching long over your peace. Just the pages turning, with the rain falling.
Your eyelids grow heavy halfway down the page. Just a blink, you think. Just a moment.
You don’t even feel yourself drift.
Kakashi notices before your book slips from your lap. His glance shifts to you, and the tiniest smile tugs at the edge of his mask.
“You lasted longer than I expected,” he murmurs to no one in particular.
He sets his own book aside with a faint rustle, then gently eases yours from your hands. Careful fingers find the spot you left off, sliding a simple paperclip—your makeshift bookmark—between the pages. It’s not fancy, just something you both tend to use when the dog-eared corners start to feel like too much disrespect.
Your head has dipped against his shoulder, breathing soft and even.
He studies you in the quiet, letting himself stare the way he never really does when you’re awake. There’s something about your sleeping face that unravels him. Like all the parts of you that try to stay srong for the world have gone still, and left only the truth behind: that you trust him enough to fall asleep like this.
That you’re safe, even with someone like him.
