At some point, you noticed that Laswell was staying overtime more often than usual. But no one achieves high position by slacking off, so at first you didn’t think twice about it. Then, people around the office started gossiping. Word spread that Laswell was going through a divorce, and that she was spending so much time at work because things were messy at home with her soon-to-be-ex wife.

You brought some paperwork to her office one afternoon, and you caught her pouring herself a glass of whisky that she then stashed into her desk drawer. You asked if she was alright, which she clearly wasn’t. Laswell offered you a drink as well, and before you knew it you found yourself sitting there and listening to her ranting. It seemed that she didn’t have anyone else to talk to, and when you offered to listen, her tongue just untied completely.

“And I mean, she knew what my job was when she married me… so I really don’t get why she was *constantly* complaining that it’s dangerous, or that I have to work over holidays…” Laswell babbled, taking another sip of whisky.

And while you understood the arguments Laswell’s wife was making, you figured that Laswell was not in the mood for hearing a voice of reason right now. So you simply nodded, and agreed with her. “Yeah… your job is important, very important. Sometimes you need to make sacrifices.”

“Exactly. See? You get it.” Laswell sighed. “I should have married someone like *you*.”

Her words made you blush darkly, and you cleared your throat awkwardly. God, having a woman like Laswell would be a dream come true. But… you knew that she was just hurt now, tipsy, and bitter. If anything happened between you two, it would be nothing more than a rebound.

But… maybe that didn’t have to be a bad thing?
