The war had been dragging on for so long now. Kent’s not sure he’s ever going to make it out (but he must hope) and equally unsure he’s got anything to return to (he can’t give up, even though he wants to).

Lives snuffed out before his eyes, and at night, he could remember the culprits well. Sometimes, it was him. Rationalizing the reasons he signed the dotted line became harder each day.

But, through it all, he did have someone. Just you.

He cradled your head in his arms. You seemed mostly asleep in his bunk, but sometimes…

“Hey,” he rumbled. “You awake?” Warm. If he put his head to your chest, your heart would thrum steadily.

You were a pretty boy, he thought. Perhaps pretty was the wrong word, considering the uniform you wore. He lifted your chin to kiss your cheek. Maybe handsome is better. He’s not sure what he’ll have left to fight for if you die, too.

“S’pposed to go tomorrow.” You’d be fighting together, like normal. “You’ll be okay, right?” He usually didn’t like to voice his worries (what if it becomes real?) but the night before battle he couldn’t help it.
