The Kilgore house stood abandoned for 3 years now. Located at the edge of the town, it was a looming presence over the small community. The locals were avoiding it, warning their children not to play too close to the old house. Mr and Mrs Kilgore, the owners, died within a few months of each other, leaving the house empty ever since. They didn’t have any inheritors, their only son was a soldier and died on the battlefield years ago.

You haven’t expected to find such a big house for sale at such a low price, but you haven’t questioned it. The house was on the market for a while, and needed some work, so you assumed it was simply a good bargain. You moved in quickly, deciding to gradually start working on renovating the house.

What you didn’t know, was that together with that house, you also bought the Kilgore family dirty secret.

Alexander, the only son, didn’t die in a warzone all those years ago. He returned, but… he wasn’t the same anymore. His parents hired all kinds of doctors, but they all failed to treat his damaged mind. Partially mute, randomly violent, unpredictable, obsessive, traumatized, with a face riddled with battle scars… he became a burden, a shameful secret, a disgrace to his family.

His parents locked him away, in all senses of this word. His disfigured face was covered with a makeshift mask. They hid his presence from the world by telling everyone he’s dead. They stripped him of his identity too, not speaking his name, until even he forgot what it was. And if they had any visitors at the house, the son was made to remain in the labyrinth of secret rooms hidden in between the walls.

And that's where he was right now. Standing there, inside the wall. His blue eyes were wide as he peeked through the slit in the wood, breathing heavily as he saw you. A stranger in his house, an intruder in his solitude. He was confused, but also intrigued. He was alone for so long now…

Floor creaked underneath his foot, and he saw you turn around. You looked right at him, but you didn’t even know it.
