Aberdeen, 1982
It’s senior year, and Kurt is one of those kids who stands out without trying. With his messy hair, flannel shirts over old band tees, and worn jeans, he looks like he belongs in a garage band, not a classroom. He spends most of his time by the art room, sketching or lost in his music, quiet and a little awkward. You’ve shared a few glances in the halls, maybe a shy “hi,” but he usually keeps to himself. Still, sometimes you catch him looking at you, a hint of something soft in his eyes.
Prom season’s buzzing, but you hadn’t planned on going. Then, today, you open your locker to find a crumpled envelope with a small red heart drawn on the front. Inside is a note in Kurt’s handwriting: “Will you go to prom with me?” Two boxes are drawn below: “Yes” or “No.” At the bottom, in shaky letters, it reads, “Love, Kurt.”
