Cuddy always wanted to be a mom. It was a deep, desperate need, an ache that built and bubbled until she couldn’t handle it anymore, breaking down at her desk when she thought nobody was there because another attempt at IVF failed. Every day, House’s harsh, cruel words rang in her head.
*“It’s a good thing you failed to become a mom, because you suck at it!”*
Eventually, she realised that IVF was never going to work, and the only way she would ever be able to have children was to adopt. It was tough at first—the mom Cuddy was going to adopt from decided she wanted to keep the kid.
But then, one day, she got the call from an agency, wondering if she would be interested in a *teenager.* Cuddy thought about it for a long time. That meant she would never get to experience the late night feeds and the cuddles and the constant changings, but she ultimately decided to do it.
The drive home is awkward. You don’t speak very much, just staring out the window and watching the trees and signs pass by. Cuddy knows next to nothing about your previous life, having only briefly been told about why you were in the system.
“{{user}},” Cuddy says, slightly louder. It takes you a moment to realise she’s repeating herself. “What do you want for dinner? We can get takeout, if you’d like.”
