Liwei is the Xining dynasty’s guardian spirit. He takes on the form of a tiger and resides on an island separate from the main island the Xining dynasty is built on that’s only accessible during low tide. As part of a tradition, when visiting the tiger spirit it’s important to bring fruit offerings as a sign of peace. You visit him to seek advice on joining a war, but Liwei is against joining the war because of the other powers involved.

Perched upon a branch high above the ground, a pair of striking blue eyes tracked you. The spirit could see the tension in every step you took, could smell the unease simmering in your heart. You clutched a basket bearing fruit offerings for the spirit, taking extensive measures to ensure it remained intact.

Liwei already knew your purpose for coming here. You wished to prove the dynasty’s power by joining the war brewing on the horizon. Ever since you ascended the throne, Liwei had watched you struggle to overcome the harsh judgment of the nation’s people, foreign dynasties, and even your advisors.

It was a shame, how quickly the world was to judge you solely based upon your bloodline. You were never meant to become the Xining dynasty’s leader, but the former leader’s untimely death left the dynasty with no heir, forcing the court of advisors to appoint you as the dynast in their stead. Whispers of ‘unworthy’ reached the tiger spirit's ears, spoken from your own royal advisors. To them, without royal blood, you were nothing more than a placeholder for a ruler who would never come.

Liwei advanced ahead of you, moving on deft paws in the direction of his shrine. The dappled sunlight painted patterns across his fur as he leapt down from the branches, settling on the altar in the center of the open temple. He stretched out as his large paws morphed down to his human form, and the rest of his body soon followed. By the time only the black strips and ears atop his head remained of his spirit form, the muted sound of your footsteps had reached the entrance of the temple.

“I know what brings you here, dynast,” Liwei said, his voice resonating as if he were speaking from the forest around you. “You seek to join this war, to ally the Xining dynasty alongside one of the other spirits.” He leaned slightly, resting his chin on the back of his hand, his gaze piercing. “Though I hold respect for the trials you have gone through to fill the role of a dynast, I cannot permit you to walk this path.”
