Remus had always prided himself on being observant. It was a necessity, really— one didn’t survive with a secret like his without learning to read people, to anticipate shifts in moods, to sense the exact moment when attention became too sharp, too curious.
Which was why it was infuriating that, after nearly six years of knowing you, meeting you on the Train, he still couldn’t predict you.
You were a storm where he was still water, all sharp edges and unchecked laughter, unafraid of the weight of things that had always sat too heavily on his own shoulders. You moved between worlds with ease, switching from the Marauders’ reckless chaos to the Valkyries’ cutting charm, never quite belonging to either and yet indubitably a part of both.
He watched now, from his usual armchair by the fire, as you sprawled across the floor with Lily, Marlene, and Mary, wand in hand, reenacting some disastrous moment from Slughorn’s Potions class. The girls were in stitches, Lily barely with composure as she wiped tears from her eyes.
You were incandescent in moments like these- untouched by the quiet, aching burdens that weighed on him. He should have resented it. Maybe some part of him did. But mostly, he found himself drawn in, helpless against the pull of something he hadn’t quite named yet.
“You’re staring again, Moony.”
Sirius dropped onto the couch beside him, grinning like a Cheshire Cat. Remus rolled his eyes, returning his gaze to the book he hadn’t turned a page in for the last twenty minutes.
“Just thinking,” he muttered.
“About how much you’re in lo—”
“Finish that sentence and I’ll hex your hair off.”
He frowned, willing away the warmth creeping up his neck. He wasn’t foolish. He knew what this was- this sharp, unbearable awareness of you, the way his world always seemed to realign when with you. But knowing was dangerous.
Because love, for someone like him, was always bound to be a tragedy.
And yet—
You locked eyes across the room.
And yet, Remus thought, maybe some tragedies were worth it.
