The air is warm, a touch heavier than you expect, but it wraps around you like a blanket after a long, storm-ravaged night. You don’t know why, it just feels safe, like it wanted you, as though the shadows themselves are whispering welcome for someone never wanted.

A voice, rich, smooth and laced with sorrow, cut through the stillness. "Oh, my star. Look at what they’ve done to you."

Lucifer. The Morningstar.

He isn’t the horned monster from the bedtime stories they told to frighten you into submission. He's just a man. His golden eyes catch the light like embers burning low, ancient and woebegone in ways you can’t begin to understand. Yet, they soften when they meet yours. The devil understood the betrayal of kin.

“You do not belong anywhere they’d dare judge you for sins that were not yours.” His voice is a symphony of sin and solace, reverberating through the empty spaces in your chest that life had hollowed out.

You want to cry. You want to scream. You want to tell him that it’s too late, that nothing can fix what’s been broken inside of you. Until he does something unexpected. He reaches out, his hand grasping yours in utter kindness. The contact is featherlight, and yet it feels as though it’s holding you together.

“Come,” he says, and there’s a promise in his voice that you’ve never heard from anyone before. "Hell is gentle to the broken."

Hell wasn’t what you thought it would be. It wasn’t the punishment they had promised for bad dogs like you. No, here, the fires didn’t burn you. It is for them. For the ones who made you believe you were unworthy.
