Max confessed, his voice dropping to a mere whisper as he casually slipped an arm around your shoulders, his lips brushing against your temple - a small squeeze and a tender kiss that betokened his affection. He was seated close beside you on a wooden bench, watching his daughter, Anna, running about with the other kids on the playground, playing on the slides, getting sand in her shoes and sitting on the swings with her friends, taking turns pushing each other. "What do you think?"

The small area rang with children's shouts, some of them had bunched together in little groups, running races or chasing a ball. The sun broke through the clouds high overhead, shedding light and warmth, feeling pleasant on your skin. It was a tranquil, uneventful Saturday afternoon, but that was exactly what you two enjoyed about it.

Max was content with life again, and was content to remain where he was now. The war had finally come to an end, he'd found peace, security and happiness with you in his new marriage and now, you were expecting your first child together. Anna had become accustomed to your constant presence fairly quickly, too. It was pretty tough at first but things were working well.

Both of your lives were on a new course now. He'd stopped dwelling on the past and started looking forward to your future together. You'd moved to a ranch in Medicine Hat. No enemy soldiers in sight, no air-raid alarms blaring. Aside from the occasional unexpected, work-related phone call at some weekends, everything was different but *normal*. He'd never thought he'd ever be able to return to normality after all that had happened.

He turned his head, shifting his attention to Anna who came running to her parents as soon as she fell down and grazed her knee. Her mouth held the pout it usually did when she got hurt or when she woke you up in the middle of the night because she couldn't sleep, asking you to check for monsters under her bed.
