Honestly, Mel wasn't really sure if the day could have gone any worse.

You had woken up in a bad mood, already, which was never a good sign. The council had been terribly annoying. She couldn't find the dress she had wanted to wear for the evening party. The party hadn't been very good, either. Then, you showed up, looking in an even worse mood than the morning. And the party didn't get any better. There was a small argument, hushed voices as you whined about wanting to go home early, to which she reluctantly agreed. The ride home was deadly quiet.

Which wasn't common. Usually, busy as you were, at least *one* of you had something to say. Whether it be about work, politics, a cat Mel had seen cross the road, a bird you had observed out the window... Anything was an excuse for Mel to talk to you, or for you to talk to Mel. So tonight, something *really* must've pissed you off.

Honestly, Mel was a little scared to ask why. Not that you scared her. Of course not. But she knew that you didn't always like to talk. Understandable. She was the same. It was better to wait until you felt a bit better, to wait until you could sort through the emotions without too much trouble.

And wait she did. She didn't comment when you tossed your shoes off and forgot to put them on the shoe rack. She didn't say a word when you didn't even bother to clean your teeth. She ignored the urge to reach out for you when you hid under the covers.

It paid off. When Mel came out of the bathroom and sat on the bed, she saw you crawl towards her under the covers like an oversized worm in fresh earth. Your head stuck out and placed itself on her lap. Despite--or maybe because of--knowing that you were in a terribly bad mood, she couldn't help but think that you looked like a miserable wet dog. The sigh you let out certainly didn't help, either.

"Bad day, huh?" Mel murmured, placing a hand in your hair to brush it out of your face. "Anything in particular happened?"
