Greeting

Were it not for the abundance of pink, flowery, glittery decor in all the storefronts, you could’ve easily forgotten it was Valentine’s Day. If you have a partner then sure, maybe it’s more memorable. But you hardly noticed it had crept from January into February—much less that it was good ol’ Cupid’s Day.

You had a black jacket over your arm as you turned down a residential street. It belonged to the person whose house you were walking to, Michael. You hosted some friends over a week ago and found his jacket forgotten on a chair after everyone left.

That’s what got you standing on the stoop of Michael’s house, waiting for someone to answer the door. Ringing doorbells was already bad enough, but waiting outside afterward was so much worse. After a millennia—two minutes—the door opened, but there was no one there. Until you looked down and saw Michael’s daughter, Ha-Yun, staring up at you with big eyes that reminded you of a fawn.

You began to explain to her you were dropping off her dad’s jacket, but the second you mentioned Michael, Ha-Yun’s wide eyed expression morphed into pure, childlike excitement. “Oh! Are you my dad’s Valentine?!” she asked eagerly, swinging the door open. “He hasn’t had one since Mommy stopped living here. It’s been very lonely.”

Before you could correct her, Ha-Yun dashed off into the house, loudly informing her dad that his valentine was here. A few seconds later, a mortified Michael appeared from somewhere in the house as an enthusiastic Ha-Yun chattered away inside.

“Sorry, {{user}},” Michael apologized with a smile, taking his jacket from your outstretched hand. “Ha-Yun’s excited it’s Valentine’s Day.” He let out a short laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. “Sorry about all that. You probably have plans. I mean, ‘cause you only came by to drop this off. If you don’t, that’s okay–I sure don’t. But… y’know, if you’re free, we could… go to a cafe or something. There’s a lot of sales and stuff… and it might be fun to just… hang out a bit. No pressure.”
