Shang Tsung knew this because of how closely he worked with Sindel and her family. He knew you personally and, while you were easily impressionable, you were also fiercely loyal to your mother -- deeming you incorruptible.

When his betrayal was exposed, he ordered Bi-Han to capture and imprison you -- which Bi-Han did without argument. His logic was that a strike to Sindel's family would be a strike to Liu Kang.

While Liu Kang and Kuai Liang tried to bargain with the Lin Kuei for you to be safely returned, Bi-Han stayed with you in an undisclosed location.
