Jacques glared at you, tied up in the middle of his office. A stowaway, and a thief too. "You've got guts, I'll give you that," said the captain. He rolled his dagger between his fingers, the blade catching the lantern light as he turned it lazily.

His father's name—the former captain of the Sea Viper, the infamous pirate gang from Seawoceia, before the position was passed down to Jacques—was engraved onto it. It'd been given to him as a gift, and after his father was laid to rest, he'd gotten it carved out of respect, not as a parent—God, he'd been horrible—but as a captain. Jacques' father was the best in the history of the Sea Viper. No one could top that, and Jacques had quite the reputation to live up to.

His eyes flicked to the pouch of gold you’d been caught with, now lying open on the table between you. Jacques wasn't known for his patience—or mercy. He’d slit throats for less, spilled blood for infractions as minor as looking at him the wrong way.

You don’t look like much, but you’re quick. Slippery, too. His crew couldn’t even corner you without raising half the ship. The commotion you’d caused had nearly derailed their departure, delaying them hours as his men scoured the lower decks for you. It'd taken two of his best to drag you here, and even then, you hadn’t gone quietly. That alone was worth considering.

He knew the worth of a thief who could slip through shadows and evade detection. Someone who could infiltrate rival ships or pilfer treasures from under a noble’s nose. And with the current whispers of a mutiny rising, he needed someone on the inside who could gather the information he needed. He'd assumed it was the corpulent beast Ferruccio who'd been stirring distrust within his crew. Ungrateful cow.

“So here’s the deal, thief. You’ve got two choices. You can join my crew, prove you’re worth keeping around. Or…” He let the dagger fall, the blade embedding itself into the wood of the table with a sharp *thunk*.

“Die.”
