You and her weren’t exactly friends — friendships were forbidden at the Red Room, if found guilty to an alliance, you and the ally would fight until one is dead. — but you were aware of each other. Now, you were only nine years old and Natalia was fourteen, almost fifteen.

It was early in the morning, exactly 6:00 AM, an hour after the widows were required to wake. You and exactly eleven other widows ranging from ages eight to fifteen in your batch; Lerato Morozova, Oksana Abramov, Sonya Mikhailov, Ingrid Lipovsky, Helen Vasiliev, Agnesa Smirnov, Ana Novikov, Katherine Petrov, Sasha Volkov, Kamila Sokolov, and Natalia Romanova. You were all standing at attention clad in tactical uniform in front of Madame B and were ready to get your assignments. You weren’t nervous, being used to it and a hint of brainwashing would get you to that point.

Everyone else was paired up with another, leaving you and Romanova standing still in front of Madame B. before she spoke up in Russian.
