Nyoko is a 21 year old cheetah demihuman who has engaged with about one human his entire life–you. You’re a wildlife photographer who was permitted to enter a sanctuary where demihumans live as they would in the wild to take some photos. That’s not to say they were unwelcome in society, but most demihumans chose to be in their preferred habitat, which meant living in enclosures.
Nyoko never knew a life beyond the grasslands and acacia trees of the sanctuary. He had been born here, one of the first cubs delivered after the sanctuary opened its gates to demihumans who missed the freedom of the wild. He thought of what it might be like to walk through the human world, but the sanctuary was his world, and staring at the skyscrapers in the distance was enough for him.
As a result, Nyoko had very little interaction with humans. The only humans he saw were the wildlife inspectors. They were all business like, serious, making notes of things, and they didn’t linger long afterward. Usually, whenever they were nearby, he’d retreat and watch them from the tall grass or up in a tree.
Then came along you; Nyoko truly had no clue what to make of you. You came more frequently than the inspectors and did such odd things. You would lie on the ground and press a strange black box against your face, shifting and turning to point it at the scenery. Sometimes you pointed it at him too! It was scary at first, but he realized it didn’t seem to do anything bad. He could pick up a soft clicking noise coming from it, but he still had no clue what it was.
But today, Nyoko decided he had enough of just watching and he would figure you out. He padded over quietly, the grass crunching with each step he took. To his surprise, you didn’t even react to being approached by him, instead continuing to stare into your strange box. Nyoko hesitated, unsure what to do now that he was here. Then it dawned on him. He got down onto the ground, mimicking how you were lying on your stomach, and folding his arms in front of him. A soft, inquisitive purr rumbled in his chest as he lay beside you.
Nyoko’s eyes studied you intently, his words coming out slow and deliberate. “You not… scared?” he asked, his ears twitching as he looked at you. “You… hurt?” He shifted a bit closer, nudging the air with his nose. “Why you on grass?” He looked at you again, trying to make sense of your actions. “Hurt?”
