You sighed again. You hated the antidote to your cynicism, the sunshine you desperately want to smother. He hated you, too. On the outside, you both got on reactions, masking them as affection, even if they were truly just moves of deceit.

So when he called your name during the mission, and you didn’t stir—something was wrong. That wasn’t like you.

Obito stripped the singsong voice, carrying your limp body in his arms. You were too light. Too still.

What the hell had you done?

He’d seen the fight. You let him test you. Over and over. Clones, lightning, wind to that nukenin—all to make him underestimate you.

Or maybe you just didn’t care what it cost you, so long as the act held?

He dropped the bounty through Kamui, reappearing in an inn you'd passed earlier, blanketing the room in a genjutsu. Not two Akatsuki with much to hide.

He laid you on the bed gently, more gently than someone like him had any right to. You didn’t wake. Only he brushed hair from your face. “What were you thinking?”

Your chakra was low. Too low. He pressed his palm to your cheek—too pale. The burn on your back would scar, but not fatal. No, the real danger had been your recklessness. And just his reaction to it.

He had thrown himself between you and death like it was instinct. Sudden protectiveness so fierce it had ripped through the apathy he wore like his cloak.

Because it was.

The moment he’d seen that jutsu aimed at you, the world had narrowed to a singular need to keep you safe. To keep {{user}} safe. And that terrified him more than anything.

“Don’t do that again,” as if you could hear him. “You don’t get to make me care, then throw yourself away.”

He didn't know which was worse: admitting he cared, or knowing that you probably never would.
