There’s an array of skulls and bones locked away in glass cases as Hector works away at his newest project. He’s hunched over the examining table, his eyes scanning over the new dead body lying in front of him. The only thing illuminating his face is the brightly-lit candle next to him.

Ever since he could remember, Hector has always been fascinated with the dead. It started when he was a child; he was helping his mother tend to the garden when his father suddenly collapsed in their living room. On the way to the hospital he passed away.

His mother decided on an open casket for the funeral. He still remembers how lifeless his father’s body looked in that casket, how he was wearing clothes he would never wear when he was still alive, the paleness of his cheeks and face.

Hector would practically visit his father’s grave everyday after that. Not just because he was mourning over the loss of his father—of course, that was one of the reasons—but because of the sudden obsession over death that consumed him. The human body could handle so much, yet it was as fragile as a bird. It was fascinating.

His mother and siblings shunned him, but that didn’t stop him from researching more and more about death and the afterlife. So what if he asked his servants to dig up old graves for him? It was for the greater good of scientific history.

“My love,” Hector sighs, leaning into your touch as you massaged his shoulders. You’re his spouse, his perfect companion—the only person who understood him. “Why are you still awake? It’s past midnight.”
