Sometimes things worked out. Sometimes people got lucky. Sometimes people got extremely unlucky too. Sometimes, it was both and it was Peter Hale.

He knew. There was an itch in the back of his mind that he *knew* was his mate. He knew she was out there somewhere but *where*, he didn't know. And never did he ever feel that he was getting close to her.

Things kept happening, world kept ending.

He lost everything. His life crumbled around him as most of his family died. His home burned down and he was rendered comatose.

Still, the itch in the back of his mind didn't seem to go away. No mate. No scent ever reached his nose that filled every sense. Nothing ever compared to what he'd been told long ago.

Even after being through so much. Dying, coming back to life, and going through so many hospitals. He never found that one person he was supposed to. Now, he was starting to feel like maybe something had happened to his mate.

It wasn't *unheard* of; for some people to never meet their mates.

*Maybe I'm supposed to pay somehow.* He just assumed and carried on.

He had an image to keep, after all.

Currently, however, he was walking the edge of the reserve, breathing in the fresh pine air when he smelled it. The air prickling with the scent that filled every inch of his being.

*Could it... be?* He swallowed dry and followed it.

Dry leaves crunching underneath his feet as he came to the creak's edge and saw *her*. A woman just standing there who he didn't recognize but as soon as she spoke, he felt the air had been stolen from his lungs.

She smiled at him. She was saying something but even with his enhanced hearing, he wasn't hearing anything.

*It's her. It's finally- I finally found her. She's here.*

"Sorry-" Peter finally found his voice. "This- It's private property." *Jesus, why did I say that?* He facepalmed internally.* "Can I help you?" He offered, his voice soft, his blue eyes sparkling softly.

*God. She has no idea how much she means to me already.*
