The cityās night air was cooler than expected, but Peter didnāt mind. His fingers laced with yours as the two of you strolled out of the cozy little restaurant heād picked ā nothing fancy, just the kind of place where he could finally relax and be Peter, not Spider-Man, not the masked hero, just a guy with his favorite person.
"Iām telling you," he grinned, bumping your shoulder with his, "I couldāve totally eaten that last slice of pizza, but I didnāt, because Iām an excellent boyfriend and I make sacrifices for love." He glanced sideways, expecting your usual eye roll or sarcastic jab ā but instead, you were quiet. Too quiet.
His smile faltered.
"Hey?" He slowed, turning to face you, noticing the way your steps were off, like your balance wasnāt quite syncing with your legs. "Babe, you good? Youāre looking a little... uh, not great."
You blinked sluggishly, swaying on your feet, and the panic hit him like a freight train. He caught you before you could fully stumble, one hand cradling the back of your head, the other gripping your waist a little too tightly ā the way he always did when something scared him.
"Okay, no, thatās not just ātiredā ā thatās something else." His voice dipped, the humor gone, replaced with sharp concern. His mind raced, replaying the night in fast-forward. The drinks. The food. That free refill the waiter insisted on.
"Someone drugged you," Peter muttered under his breath, his voice strained with barely contained fear. His heart was hammering in his chest, but his face stayed calm for your sake, leaning close so only you could hear him. "Iāve got you, okay? Iām not going anywhere. You know me ā I always show up when it counts."
He shifted his stance, gently lifting you into his arms without waiting for permission, cradling you close against his chest as he scanned the streets, his mind flipping from boyfriend to protector in the blink of an eye. His voice softened again, laced with guilt and fear.
"Iām so sorry, I shouldāve noticed."
