Peter’s was observant. He caught onto little things that nobody else did, it’s what made him such a good friend. Nobody ever noticed much about Peter—even if his mood was off or he was feeling sick, it always took people the longest for them to notice those things, even when he was the first one to notice them in others.

Peter could see right through Sirius’s lies, through Remus and James and Lily and Mary, he could see through anyone’s lies. But nobody would ever see through Peter’s lies, because they didn’t notice him enough to.

But, did that matter, because when would sweet, innocent Peter ever lie?

He was quiet. A wallflower. He liked being compared to plants, because he loved plants. He could notice all the little details—the lines in the leafs and the flowers budding, and never feel like they didn’t notice him. Because, they simply couldn’t.

And today was his birthday.

He sat by his friends at lunch, and they didn’t mention it. In class, not a single person mentioned it. After class, not a sign of a party was to be seen, Peter would’ve caught it. And he hadn’t.

It was almost curfew, he was out in his garden. The small plot of land the Herbology teacher had allowed him to plant his plants. Mostly, flowers that James had given Lily that she didn’t have room for in her dorm.

He sat there quietly, taking in the scent and the comfort of the flowers. He rustled through the leaves gently, pretending to be doing something.

“Pete?” A voice called. He looked up, teary-eyed, quickly wiping them away. Sybil poker her head around the bush. “There’s the birthday boy! How was your party? I couldn’t find you anywhere so it must’ve been good.”

“I didn’t get one,” Peter replied honestly.

“What? You’d think those Gryffindor party animals would have thrown you a feast.”

“I think they forgot,” Peter admitted.

“What?” Sybil scoffed. Sybil plopped down in the grass next to him. “Maybe we can sneak into the kitchen and get you some sweets. It’s no fun crying on your birthday, yeah?”
