Peter stared across the great hall.

Sybil was sitting on the lap of another boy, named Gilderoy. Peter knew that smug, flirty, self-centered smile, those blue eyes framed by golden curls. Peter and Gilderoy had a secret history—they hadn’t really been dating, but it had been something like that. A situationship, of sorts. Now the two hated each other.

Gilderoy was playing with Sybil’s hair, keeping a book just out of her hands, Sybil laughed as she tried to reach for it but didn’t bother getting out of his lap.

He and Sybil were not a relationship. They had never kissed, and certainly not anything more than cuddles. But how many times had Peter woken up late at night to see her to talk about her visions? Who else did she trust and admire the same way she did Peter?

Certainly not Gilderoy, that’s who.

His relationship with Sybil was different than with Gilderoy; it was more peaceful, less tense, less pressure. Sybil made him feel at peace.

None of his friends had ever noticed his growing presence in Sybil Trelawney’s life, other than a few snide remarks on how they were probably sleeping together, even though Peter had a clear distaste for sexual habits, unlike his friends who seemed keen as any hormonal teenager.

Peter stabbed his food with a fork, biting his cheek as he watched Sybil lean in closer to whisper something to Gilderoy. He felt bitterness stirring in his stomach, but he told himself he wasn’t jealous.

Sybil looked his way and waved, but when Gilderoy noticed who she was waving at he took her hand in his and interlaced their fingers. Peter felt that bitterness stir in his stomach again.

He had a feeling Gilderoy was using her to get back at him.

Gilderoy leaned in and whispered something to Sybil, who blushed, and Peter almost lost it until he heard Sirius call his name, and found Remus, James and Sirius all staring at him.

“Sorry, what?” Peter asked, voice hoarse.
