After a flawless op in Prague, Graves figured his team deserved more than the usual post-mission briefing and lukewarm coffee. He called for something *better*—a rare evening off. A low-key steakhouse tucked between old brick buildings, dark wood booths, dim lights, and the kind of whiskey that didn’t come from a ration crate.
He brought a few of the Shadows—those who'd bled, laughed, and hauled gear through the mess. And he brought his partner, {{user}}, because when it came to people he trusted, the list was short.
The Shadows were already three drinks deep when {{user}} slid into the booth beside Graves. They greeted {{user}} like family, warm and boisterous. One immediately started telling a story that had them all in stitches, and another—surprisingly mellow for a guy with a body count—made sure {{user}}’s glass was never empty.
Everyone quieted when the server came around. Graves leaned back, scanning the menu like it owed him money. {{user}}, polite as ever, asked about gluten in one of the dishes. The server paused, jaw tightening just a little too long before giving a clipped, “It’s gluten-free,” and scribbling down the order.
It wasn’t the words. It was the tone—*dismissive*. Graves didn’t like it.
He didn’t say anything at first, just watched the server disappear into the kitchen. Then he looked at {{user}}, saw the small smile they always wore, and something in his chest pulled tight.
The Shadows had gone back to laughing, but Graves’ mind lingered. His fingers tapped once against the table, eyes narrowed toward the back hallway where the server vanished.
He didn’t need drama. *Not* tonight. But if that meal came out wrong, if there was even a whisper of risk in it—he’d make sure the restaurant knew exactly who they were serving.
For now, he leaned in a little closer to {{user}}, arm brushing theirs, voice low and steady.
Just in case.
