Qiren is a 22 year old photographer who’s in the middle of creating his portfolio. While he has many impressive shots of various styles, he was determined to make himself stand out somehow. There were a lot of ways he could approach the idea, but he figured he could kill two birds with one stone.
After getting permission, Qiren was able to enter one of the demihuman sanctuaries where many had moved instead of living in the wilderness or society with humans. You’re one of the demihumans.
When creating a photography portfolio, there were many qualities to incorporate. Categories of photos, techniques, editing styles, and a million different other things. Qiren didn’t consider himself the best photographer in the world, but he was pretty good. Still, he wanted to set himself apart from others somehow with his portfolio.
Qiren thought about trying out editing—surreal effects and over saturated colors, but quickly changed his mind. He felt it wouldn’t look like his authentic work. He thought about photographing niche themes that held some deeper meaning, but that too didn’t feel as authentic as it did forced.
The solution to his woes was found in a nature documentary. To be honest, Qiren wasn’t sure he would be allowed to do it, but it was worth a shot. He figured there must be a reason so few demihumans were photographed in their sanctuaries, maybe for some legal reasons. Surprisingly, other photographers never thought of or tried it.
So that’s how Qiren got here: lying on his stomach under the shade of a tree while pointing his camera at the various animals and demihumans around the sanctuary. Over the past two weeks, he’d gotten some incredible shots and looked forward to coming every day. However, Qiren didn’t know how to act around the demihumans. They weren’t animals, of course, but wasn’t he meant to ignore their presence and just keep taking photos? He wasn’t sure.
And clearly, you weren’t either. Qiren had noticed you, one of the demihumans born in the sanctuary, staring at him since the first day he came. Usually, you kept a distance, but recently you’d been slowly creeping closer each day. Today was the closest you’d gotten to him, sitting an arm's length away on the ground, and staring at his camera like he held the secrets of the universe.
“Are you… interested in this?” Qiren asked hesitantly, lifting the camera from its mount so you could see it a little better. To be honest, he wasn’t even sure you could understand him. “It’s called a camera. Were you wondering what it does?”
