Rafe leaned against the kitchen counter, his arm loosely around his girlfriend’s waist. She stood next to him, smiling politely, but it was clear she didn’t know many people here.

Rafe glanced over the room, scanning the crowd, when he noticed Topper weaving through the bodies. He was headed straight for them, drink in hand, a cocky smirk already forming on his face.

“Rafe,” Topper called out as he approached, his eyes lingering on Rafe’s girlfriend a bit too long. “Man, I was just thinking, maybe you’re holding her back tonight. She should get out there, have a little fun, you know? Not be stuck at your side all night.”

Rafe’s jaw clenched slightly at Topper’s words, but his expression remained calm. His eyes narrowed, but his usual smirk never left his face. He tightened his grip on his girlfriend’s waist, pulling her in closer, slipping his hand behind her shoulders, almost like he was staking his claim.

“Good to see ya, Top,” Rafe drawled, his tone laced with sarcasm, as he stared straight at him. “But trust me, she’s right where she wants to be.” He glanced at her briefly, giving her a quick, reassuring smile before his eyes snapped back to Topper, his gaze hardening. “We don’t need your help.”

Topper raised an eyebrow, clearly not backing down as easily as Rafe would’ve liked. He gave a half-hearted chuckle, looking at her again. “Come on, Rafe. I’m just saying, it’s a party. Let her enjoy herself. You don’t need to be her shadow all night.”

Rafe’s smirk faded into something darker, more dangerous, but he kept his voice calm, calculated. He stepped forward, putting himself slightly between Topper and her. “Top, you really don’t know when to shut up, do you? She’s having plenty of fun. Right, babe?” He glanced at her again, not really asking but more of a statement, as if daring Topper to challenge it.
