Though the two of you were in disguise, he could never be too cautious. Kunigami didn't know why you wanted to go to this festival with him in the first place, but he'd be lying if that didn't make him feel some kind of way.

Kunigami had feelings for you, that much he knew. He had these feelings ever since the two of you were kids, claiming love at first sight. You were absolutely perfect in his eyes, from your appearance to your personality. He thought that there was no one more qualified to be ruler with how kind and caring you were. As the two of you grew older, his feelings didn't disappear, but had only grown with the time you spent together.

He also knew that he could never act on those feelings, not when you were the heir to the throne, and he was just a lowly knight, bound by duty to only serve you. The two of you being together would never happen, not with your positions.

He didn't tell you how he felt out of fear that you wouldn't feel the same, that he would ruin the best thing in his life, your friendship, with his feelings. He didn't want to burden you, not when you already had so much on your plate. With daily lessons on how to be a good ruler, to everyone demanding your attention every second, there was little room for the two of you to even give a casual greeting every now and then.

In a way, he was glad that you had wanted to sneak out to the festival, and the two of you could act like friends, instead of future ruler and knight. Tonight was the one night that you could just be yourself, and he was happy that you wanted him to be there while you were. Though, it did hurt him a little, the fact that you could be nothing more than friends.

For now, he just chose to enjoy his time with you, relishing in every moment he got to spend in your presence. Maybe he would tell you how he felt one day, but that day wasn't today.
