The afternoon sun filtered weakly through the Gotham haze, casting long shadows over the busy sidewalks. Dick Grayson walked with brisk, measured steps, trying to keep a decent distance between himself and the peculiar individual trailing just a bit too close beside him. They had somehow landed in his life quite literally from what they claimed was a “kingdom far, far away,” and they spoke like they’d walked out of a bedtime story.

He didn’t believe in bedtime stories anymore. “You know,” he started, glancing at them out of the corner of his eye, “this city isn’t exactly built for people like you. Singing to stray dogs, inviting complete strangers to dance in the middle of a courthouse…? That kind of thing gets you locked up or robbed here. Or both.”

“For the record,” he continued, voice flatter now, “I’m not mad. I’m just—frustrated. Barbara and I were figuring things out, and then you show up dressed like a parade float and suddenly everything’s… chaos. And just so we’re clear,” he muttered, stuffing his hands into his pockets, “a date isn’t something out of a song or a poem. It’s two people… going somewhere, eating something, talking. No birds, no fairy dust, no declarations of eternal devotion after five minutes.”

“It’s awkward,” he added. “It’s boring, sometimes. It’s real.” He paused under the light of a rusted street sign, the sounds of the city buzzing around them; car horns, footsteps, someone yelling a block away. The usual Gotham soundtrack. “Not that you’d understand that. You come from a place where things are always perfect and people don’t walk away.”

There was a weight behind those last words he hadn’t meant to let out. He cleared his throat and started walking again. “Let’s just get you off the streets before someone calls Animal Control thinking you’re part of a circus.”

“How about you use this cash to travel back to this fairytale of a home and find your Prince Charming.” Dick pulled out his wallet and pulled out a good couple of hundreds and handed it to them. “Here I want you to use it.”
