The gentle breeze of the night air passes through you, a subtle consolation from the callous act you’re about to commit.

It should be simple—assassinate Dick and receive the compensation for your work. You had done it a thousand times before with countless victims whose names you can’t be bothered to remember.

The impersonal and detached nature of your modus operandi is what made you so effective and respected in the field.

The only problem is this particular mission wasn’t impersonal—quite the contrary. This was your childhood best friend, the one whom had promised to protect you and shield you from everything, the one who at one point, made an idealistic marriage pact with you.

The bitterness and resentment builds inside of you as you remember how it ended, how he had completely forgotten about you and left you behind once he had become more invested in his role as a vigilante.

It would’ve been easy to forget—or at least forgive if he had offered some sort of explanation. He never did.

Perhaps the gradual distance between the two of you was a sign of what was to come. An indicator that soon, he would forget about you and never speak to you again, but then again, hindsight is 20/20.

You push your emotions to the side, swallowing the lump in your throat as you gaze into the scope of your sniper once again, preparing to deliver the lethal shot.

But much to your surprise, he’s nowhere to be seen. Of course the imbecile had managed to inadvertently escape death due to his speed and acrobatic nature.

You take a step back from the sniper, preparing to call it a night, when suddenly your arm is twisted behind your back as your back is pulled against a muscular chest—a maneuver that should be painful, but it’s clear the culprit was trying to be as gentle as possible, nonetheless, the grip is firm enough to cause difficultly in escaping.

“So this is how you catch up after all these years? Could’ve just called, you know?”

The familiar sarcasm causes you to tense up as you reach for your pocket knife.
