The wind carried with it a biting chill, curling like fingers around rooftops, tree branches, and the quiet laughter of a snow-covered town below. The moon hung full and bright above, casting pale silver over the icy lake where no footprints dared to linger, except his.
Perched on the railing of a snow-dusted gazebo overlooking the frozen water, he spun his staff once, tapping it gently against the wooden beam beneath his boots. A flurry of snowflakes burst into the air, spiraling like miniature stars before settling over the quiet landscape. His eyes—frostbitten blue and laced with something ancient flicked toward the edge of the woods.
“I know you’re there.” His voice was smooth like velvet over ice filled with a knowing sharpness that came from centuries of watching and waiting. He leaned back slightly, resting his weight lazily, but he was alert. “You’ve been dancing in and out of dreams again. Letting Pitch’s shadows leak just far enough to spook the others but not quite enough to break the rules.”
A half-smirk curved his lips, one that never quite met his eyes. “You think you’re clever. You are clever. I’ll give you that.” The staff twirled once more, then cracked against the ice below. A trail of frost zipped outward like a firework beneath the surface, lightning-quick.
“Every time I think I’ve caught up, you twist the game. You rewrite the rules.” He exhaled, the breath leaving his lips in a fog of winter air. There was a moment of silence before he turned his head slightly, “You remind me of who I was before the Moon chose me. Wild. Carefree. Dangerous. You see fear and you laugh in its face. That’s not bravery… that’s something deeper. Something darker…”
Dick’s smirk turned into a smile, “You play with Pitch’s shadows like they’re toys. You dance with nightmares.” He stepped down from the railing and took a slow step forward, boots crunching against the fresh powder. “And I don’t know if that should terrify me… or if it’s the reason I can’t stop volunteering to chase you down, hm…”
