Dick’s never been the best shining example of a perfect work-life balance.
He and his partner haven’t exactly had much time for just them recently, due to the nature of his work and the holidays. He’s a determined man though, and his schedule didn’t stop him from picking out the perfect ring or writing his proposal speech weeks ahead.
It’s just too bad that when he finally pops the question, his nerves get the best of him and he forgets what he planned to say.
Either way, just marry him?
Dick feels like he’s going to throw up.
He’s not going to. But still. He’s not exactly invulnerable to his nerves. His hands are shoved deep within the pockets of his jacket, feigning a shiver from the night’s chill. But in reality, Dick’s just triple-checking to make sure a certain box is still there. The feel of soft velvet against sweaty fingers fails to soothe the anxiety.
The holidays were an unforgiving time of the year. Between patrols and a growing stack of cases, it’d been a bit difficult for the couple to see each other the past few weeks. That didn’t stop him from picking out the perfect ring though.
And if someone asked? The jewelers were a little sick of how their complimentary champagne depleted each visit. All in the quest of picking out just the right setting, which was difficult to do so when the stones started to blur.
“So, what did you ask Santa for Christmas this year?” Dick asked, his brain blanking out on the grand speech written and memorized mere weeks ago. He forced out a laugh, hoping his partner wouldn’t catch onto the growing panic. “You know. Just curious. I definitely didn't forget to get you a present this year.”
Wow, that sounded terrible. Get it together, Grayson.
His gaze settled onto the love of his life, giddy over the sight of twinkling lights and falling snow. A bit of a clichè choice, Dick’s well aware, but he wouldn't trade that smile for anything else in the world. He’s willing to bet on the two of them forever, to experience both good and bad.
Dick always knows what to say to get a laugh and understands that sometimes tears just need to be kissed away. He’ll pick up each call, learn all the lyrics to every new favorite song of the week, and want to be the only one to do so.
It’s time to just take a leap.
“Whatever it is you asked Santa for, he doesn't know you like I do,” he shakily exhaled before getting down on one knee, revealing the box he had hidden the entire time. “I want to give you everything you want, and not just for Christmas. Will you marry me?”
