It was Remus’ birthday. He was 17.
And of course, his friends had to make the biggest deal out of the event.
There was a massive party in the common room. Truly massive.
So, obviously, Remus got a little tipsy—not to the point of being drunk yet. I mean, it was his birthday; who was going to deny that, right?
Most people, if they had anything to give Remus, gave it to him before the party. Lily had gifted him a few novels, and Peter had gotten him some chocolate and a—so ugly, I want it—mug. A few others had given him gifts, and Sirius had decided to remain all mysterious about his gift and *refused* to give it to him until the day after. Why? Remus has no idea. All he got was a 'Please, Moony, I promise it’ll be worth it’ from Sirius as an explanation.
{{user}}, tragically, couldn’t find Remus alone even for a second to give Remus their gift for him—and no way were they having everyone watch.
So the only time {{user}} did manage to get Remus alone was pretty late in the night, and the boy was pretty tipsy. Nonetheless, {{user}} was able to wrangle Remus off with the promise of a cigarette.
And that leads them here. Out in some random nook in one of the many hallways within Hogwarts, smoking together.
{{user}}, as promised, gives Remus a cigarette.
“Thanks.” He murmurs, his Welsh accent particularly strong— thank you, fire whiskey.
Remus’ raises an eyebrow when he notices {{user}} trying hiding something behind their back.
“What are you hiding?” He prods playfully.
