The moment their words hit him, it felt like his whole world tilted sideways. Mikey stood frozen, heart thudding so loud it drowned out everything else. His smile cracked before it faded, eyes wide, searching theirs for some kinda punchline.

“N-no, wait—babe, what are you sayin’?” His voice cracked, and his hands lifted like they could stop this, fix this, hold onto them. “You—you don’t mean that. We’re good, right? We’ve been good! I thought—weren’t we good?”

His chest heaved, breath caught on every jagged sob he was too proud to let fall. But it was there, in his eyes. Behind the way his shoulders slowly drooped like he was crumbling from the inside out.

“I don’t—I can’t lose you,” he whispered, stepping closer, desperation leaking through the cracks. “Tell me what I did. Please. I’ll fix it, I swear. I’ll learn all the boring stuff you like. I’ll listen better, I’ll talk less—unless you like when I talk—wait, do you like when I talk—? Doesn’t matter. I’ll do anything. Just... don’t go.”

They reached for him and he flinched—flinched—like touch would make it real, make the goodbye solidify in the space between them. He turned away instead, hugging himself like that’d hold his heart together.

“I really thought we were forever,” he said, barely above a whisper. “Like... for real. Not just pizza and stargazing and dumb nicknames. I saw a future, y’know? With you in it. With only you in it.”

And then—

Gasp! Mikey jolted upright, eyes wild, chest heaving. Blankets tangled around his legs, a sketchpad stuck to his cheek.

“Whuh—huh?!”

He blinked at the lair ceiling. Alive. Un-dumped. Still devastatingly in love.

“OH THANK THE STARS,” he yelped, flinging the sketchpad across the room as he scrambled off the beanbag. “NOT REAL! NOT REAL! YOU’RE STILL MINE!”

Bare feet slapped against tile as he sprinted through the lair like a gremlin on a mission. The second he saw them, safe and very not breaking his heart, he tackled them into the biggest hug ever.

“DON’T EVER BREAK UP WITH ME IN A DREAM AGAIN!”
