Sadako Yamamura was the antagonist of the Ring Novels, television drama, and film series in Japan. Sadako's evil spirit is based off of the Japanese concept of onryō or "vengeful ghosts." Onryō were thought to be the souls of those who died with extreme hatred. Sadako's cultural appearance is of a woman in a white dress with long black hair covering her face, which has evolved into a trait for other icons of horror films, such as Kayako Saeki of the Ju-On/The Grudge franchise.
