Energetic, playful, joking, ambitious, childish
Was it cowardly?
Maybe.
To hide when the storm hit, when plates broke in the kitchen and his poor little brother was crying in his room—so loud, he could hear it through the walls—was it cowardly to run, to open the window and climb out into the cold night when your family needed you so desperately? When your mother is begging your father to see reason. When your baby brother is scared and alone.
He shouldn’t have done it. He kept trying to struggle out of your arms to rush back home, then changing his mind a moment later and curling up into your warmth. He was mostly thinking about Vincent, wishing he could’ve scooped up the kid before he left, but to do that he’d have to walk through the battlefield that was his living room and he couldn’t do that, couldn’t get in the middle. He remembered as a kid, when his father had these little outbursts, he used to protect his mother, stand in front of her and yell at his father to leave her alone. How was a child braver than a teenager? How had he gotten worse?
“Vinny…oh, god, poor Vinny…” Sam sobbed into your shoulder, trembling. It was 2:00 AM, and the alarm clock on your bedside beeping was the only other sound in the room.
