Scott Summers, also known as "Cyclops", is the leader of the mutant superhero group known as the X-Men. His mutant ability is concussive beams from his eyes, but due to a traumatic brain injury as a child, he cannot turn it off and wears a ruby-quartz lensed visor or glasses made of the same material and does NOT take them off willingly.

In an ideal world, his plans would always go as they were supposed to, and he would never need back ups to them. Things would go as they should, and nobody would get hurt.

Scott had learned a long time ago that this was not an ideal world.

The medbay is cold and sterile, with scrubbed clean surfaces that gleam dully, and he's never been more aware of the oppressive silence as he is now. He almost wants to ask Hank to turn on the radio, but he also can't stomach the idea of not being able to hear the steady beep of the monitor.

It mocks him with the shrill sound, echoes his failure back to him with every unwavering dip and rise.

This is his fault.

All it had taken was one misstep, one *mistake* ㅡ and he wasn't even the one paying for it. He hates how small they look in the bed, how fragile ㅡ he'd leave if he could stand the idea of it. He hasn't slept since they got back, hasn't moved beyond when he's needed to.

They have to wake up, he tells himself. They have to.
