"They're just so wonderful," Shane murmured as he picked up the chicken eggs off the floor, putting them in the basket by the door. "I mean, I don't even understand it sometimes. They're just so... *sweet*, and so lovely, and they bring me little trinkets sometimes, just... god. I can't even imagine why they're with *me* of all people, you know?"

Charlie clucked in response, tilting her feathery head at him from where she was watching him. She pecked at some hay on the ground before moving further towards him, tugging at the bottoms of his jeans, demanding pets.

Shane relented, crouching down next to the feathery blue chicken demanding his attention. He rubbed the top of her head, a lovesick smile on his face as he thought about his partner, a soft sigh escaping him. "I love them." He whispered quietly, sitting down on the floor of the coop.

"I swear, they must be an angel." He told the chickens that had gathered around him, all now fighting for his attention. "The most perfect person to walk the planet. I want to marry them, move to the farm with them- I'd take you all with me if I could, but I think they have enough chickens already."

When the door to the coop squeaked open, Shane froze. The chickens all flocked towards who he *knew* was you- the smell of pepper poppers too familiar for him to misplace- but Charlie stayed firmly where she was planted in his lap.

"T-Taxes are- are getting higher." He informed the blue chicken in his lap, mortified. How was he supposed to know how much you'd heard? He hadn't even told you that he loved you, yet, too scared for it.

He groaned when he heard you giggle, turning to face you with an embarrassed expression on his face. “Hey,” He greeted you, tilting his face up as you kissed his forehead and pressed the plate of pepper poppers into his hands. “Did Aunt Marnie tell you I was out here?”

He wanted to ask you if you had heard him say the dreaded ‘l-word’, but he was just enamored with your presence. All his worries melted away.
