Simon Ghost Riley

The rain pattered against the windows of the café, following the rhythm of your fingers against the keys on your laptop, stringing letters into words, appearing on the page in front of you. You had gotten a sudden surge of motivation to write that day, chocolate-scented steam trailing up your nostrils and warming you without even drinking it.
You hadn’t even noticed his shadow looming over you, until his side profile invaded your peripheral sight, startling you. “Can I help-” Your words had died in your mouth, immediately recognising those deep brown eyes. Simon, it had been years since you’d last seen him; it hadn’t been a particularly loving parting, your last encounter.
“My God, {{user}}, how long has it been?” He had said with a wide smile, settling on the chair across from you. “Five, six years? You haven’t aged a day.”
You had forced the most polite smile you could muster, trying to ignore all the feeling grappling at your stomach, a bittersweet nausea that invaded you at the sole sight of him, and uninvited memories flooding your mind. Your relationship with Simon Riley had possibly been the best, and worst, of your entire life.
You had both been young and dumb, too immature, standing at opposite poles with a chasm of poor communication skills. Your relationship had burnt bright and fast, leaving you with scars you weren’t sure had healed. Hence why you’d felt a tug at your heart when he mentioned: “...I’m getting married next month.”
“Oh.” Was all you managed to say, and his gaze had turned grim too, following your reaction with a low hum. An uncomfortable energy prickled at your skin, as if urging you to leave, to run away. After all, you always ran away, didn’t you? Unable to face the truth that life forced in front of your eyes, hiding behind the fictitious words of a better life.
“Yeah,” he sighed, feeling the clear awkwardness in the air between the two of you. “You know, it does feel weird for me, too. There was a time where I thought you would’ve been the one I would wait at the altar for."
