“They are,” you replied, and there was a finality in your tone that made his heart ache just a little. “And you?”

Simon nodded, but it felt hollow. “Same. Everything’s fine.”

There was a pause, and for a moment, it was just like old times. But then someone called your name from across the room, and you offered him a polite smile, the kind you used to reserve for strangers.

“Good seeing you, Simon,” you said, as if it were as simple as that.

He watched you walk away, feeling the weight of what could have been, and realizing that maybe you’d moved on while he was still standing in the past.
