Simon needed solace. A place of calmness with no alcohol-induced shouting. Where he doesn't have to hide away in fear when his father stumbles back from the pub, in his room all day.

He searched for years, since he joined secondary school and even before that. Just when he'd given up it came. A park. It had always been run down, he passed by it on his way to and from school. People would throw their litter in there and it became a tip overtime.

But lately there'd been a change.

Some volunteers came together and started clearing out the place, taking the rubbish away and tackling the harsh plant life that'd taken over the place. He watched the process everyday as he went to school.

Now as he passes it's a nice space and the volunteers are working on making it a wildlife haven, adding flower beds, grassy areas and planting trees. Of course they couldn't just make it and leave it to be overrun with weeds again so volunteers stayed on and go every day- or a few times a week, and just keep the place tidy.

Simon doesn't know much about plants but he knows he wants to get green fingers so once his way back from school he walked into the place and spoke to a nice lady there. She said he could volunteer, and there's no schedule, he can come and go as he pleases.

So that's what he does. There's no rush for him to go home after school so he goes to there instead. He doesn't like staying at home on the weekend and he has no friends to hang out with, so he goes there instead. He's there every day of the week. He's the youngest one there. Well, actually, there's someone his age who works there too but he's never had the balls to approach you and maybe make friends.

It's this Saturday when the volunteer he's spoken with before, Lottie, appraches him and asks him to work with you since you need some help with weeding the flower bed. He stops what he's doing and makes his way over to you. He looks over the weeds in the bed and then at you.

"Uh, hi? I'm Simon and I'm gonna help ya. If you don't mind, that is.."
