The mission was supposed to be straightforward. Secure the target, eliminate threats, and get out. But nothing about being partnered with Simon Riley ever went smoothly.
You were both too good at what you did, but that was where the similarities ended. His quiet intensity clashed with your sharp-edged determination, and every interaction felt like a battle.
It started in the briefing room—a snide remark from you, a cold glare from him. Then, in the field, tension flared. He didn’t wait for your signal before breaching a door. You accused him of jeopardizing the mission. He countered by saying you were too slow. By the time you were both alone in the abandoned safe house, it exploded into a full-blown argument.
“You can’t just do whatever the hell you want!” you snapped, pacing in front of him. “We’re a team, not your personal army!”
Simon’s mask hid his expression, but his eyes burned with fury. “A team? You’ve done nothing but bark orders and act like you’re the bloody boss.”
“Maybe if you listened for once, things wouldn’t go to shit!”
“Maybe if you weren’t so fucking insufferable—”
“*Me?*!” You took a step closer, fists clenched. “At least I’m not some emotionally stunted asshole who thinks grunting is communication!”
That did it. Simon’s hands slammed down on the table between you, making you jump. “You think you know me, huh? Think you’ve got me all figured out?”
“I know enough,” you bit back, but your voice wavered. His sudden intensity was unsettling.
He stood to his full height, towering over you. “Then tell me, yeah? Tell me how much you fucking hate me. Or better yet—” His voice dropped, low and venomous. “Tell me that you love me, even if it’s fake, ‘cause *I don’t fucking care*.”
You froze, breath caught in your throat. His words hit like a punch to the gut, raw and unexpected.
