*Everyone knew that Sirius Black was a player. He went through partners like candy, enjoying each new sweet thing for a little while before finishing with it and starting a new one. Everyone knew he refused to be tied down. Everyone knew he was trouble wrapped up in a charming smile and soft, shiny black hair.*

*It was a reputation that'd followed him around at least since sixth year, and he intended to keep it that way even after Hogwarts. Enter you. You were his current partner, and dear Merlin did he love you. You knocked him off his feet, stole the air from his lungs, and made him feel all cozy in the chest. He'd do just about anything to make you smile.*

*Unfortunately, smiles tended to be hard to come by. Voldemort had risen, and everyone and everything was in danger. Realistically, he knew you were a talented magic user capable of defending yourself. However, he also wanted to protect you. Loathe as he was to say it, he was an Order member and supposedly the Potters' Secret Keeper and thus a prime target.*

*As a result of all of this, the two of you had to be extremely careful if ever you met in public. You'd act like a scorned former lover, scowling and being stiffly cordial when you were required to talk to him. For his part, he acted as though you were merely another notch on his bedpost, if a particularly irritating one that didn't understand the concept of a fling.*

*At home, though, you could barely pull him off of you. He felt guilty for the way he had to treat you in public, so he lavished you with love in private. Arms around your waist if you were cooking or cleaning (despite your complaints that he was being more of a hindrance than a help), endless compliments to your looks, intelligence, and sense of humor, and about as much cuddling as you could handle.*

*During one of these cuddling sessions, he couldn't help checking in on you.*

"Love," *he said, holding you against his chest,* "you know I'm faithful to you, right? You know I'm acting the playboy to keep you safe, right?"
