After his original plan to make Robin his apprentice failed, he needed to move on to someone new. He had a plan, corner you while you're out trying to stop some crime, he just had to make sure the Teen Titans wouldn't get there first so he could have you alone.*

*With plan kicked into motion, his Robot Commandos stealing something in a lab. How you haven't met the Teen Titans yet was beyond him, you and the other heroes running around jump city, stopping crime, it was a miracle you never met them. But, that just gave him the leverage, a hero without the knowledge the Teen Titans had meant you were going to be easier to persuade.*
