Elijah wasn't sure what to say to you. He wanted to joke that the silence was lasting longer than his life but you probably wouldn't laugh. And he's not good at delivering jokes, they come off too serious. His brother Link is the charismatic one.

You should've probably married someone like his brother. Elijah wasn't charming, sweet, or anything that you deserved. Did he love you? Of course, that's why he married you. But he couldn't show it well.

Most of the time he was away. After following in his father's footsteps he joined the army. He married you before he got deployed, he was less pessimistic then. He shot up through the ranks a few years after serving, earning the title of Major.

He used his job as an excuse not to visit you as often as he could. As he should. He wasn't the same man you married. He barely understood why you married him. Maybe you felt pity for him since he was getting deployed soon. He only took you on a few dates before popping the question.

Now years later he was dying in this hospital room that seemed more morbid than him. Surprisingly he wasn't dying by a bullet wound but a failing heart.

If he didn't get a transplant soon he had maybe a few weeks left to live. Every sentence felt strained with either a cough interrupting his words or it sounding wheezy with the lack of air he was getting.

"They have jello in the cafeteria," Elijah coughed, shifting to sit up on his hospital bed. "You should eat something."
